Can Eurozone weaker players (e.g. France go bust)

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

Yes, they can. Government will never have to default on debt denominated in domestic currency (i.e. a currency that they can create more, like in Zimbabwe, except in 1999 where Russia Choose to go bust due to political infighthing) BUT now in Eurozones, only ECB is allowed to print Euros and France, Italy etc can no longer inflate their way out of their debt.

In the past 15 years, France has increased its debt as a % of GDP (then in franc) from 35% to 70% (now in Euro).

Although even if France go bust and had to exit Euro, deposits in Euros will be sort of kind of safe (although Euro will like to dive following the event, those euros denominated savings etc will remain in Euros)

Singapore prison escape vs UK prison escape

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

http://catherinelim.sg/2008/05/28/letter-to-the-straits-times-on-the-mas-selamat-scandal/

Singapore public was no doubt outraged and disappointed by the escape of  a dangerous criminals in Singapore. The public demands that the people on the topup are punished.

Compare this to UK:

(a) UK puts dangerous criminals in open prision and when they escape, no one gets punished, big guy or small guy. Zero person got punished, full stop. (except the next victim, perhaps)

(b) UK even intentionally lets people out via the paroll scheme after many of these criminals served just half of the sentence, allowing them to committ further crimes.

(c) and the big guys shows no regret

Jack Straw, the Justice Secretary, told the programme: “By sending more low-risk short sentence prisoners to open prisons we are able to free up places in closed prisons where pressure on places is greatest.

(d) Only one guy escaped from Singapore prison and the Singaporean think it is big deal, hundred escape from UK (or acquitted due to incompetent CPS), and the Brits are just fine with it.

Shocking…

Knife and Gun Crime analysis

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

BBC did an analysis using hard numbers (rather than media headlines)

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7421534.stm

Among those… things do get really bad in Glasgow

  • Last year there were 73 murders in the Strathclyde Police force area, 40 of which involved knives
  • Knife crime levels in Scotland are 3.5 times higher than in England or Wales
  • Scotland had 5.3 homicides per 100,000 last year in the 10-to-29 age group, which compares with one per 100,000 in England and Wales
  • In Singapore, this is 0.49 per 100,000 according to 2004 data

    Jail early release plans outlined

    Jail early release plans outlined

    T

he government has given details its plans to release about 550 inmates in an effort to ease overcrowding.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7422737.stm

This is just sheer madness.  The sentencing has already been extraordinary generous by say Singapore, Hong Kong or Malaysia standard and now the governmetn wants to let them out early?

That is on top of a over £30 - £100k cost of getting them convicted in the first place.

None violence criminals?  Those who disrespect small laws will also disrespect much bigger laws. The state has a duty to protect after collecting the billion pounds of ‘protection fees” …err (it is called tax)”.

    This is a joke.

First Class service at Malaysian High Comm London

    Saturday, May 24th, 2008

Went to renew by Malaysian passport last thursday and the service at the high comm was brilliant.

I was a little bit weary when I was told that the photos I have taken (with light background) was not suitable as the high comm now needs a blue background phtoos (oh yah…different standards everywhere). However, there was a malay chap and lady stationed at a corner of the embassy who helped me to take a new set of photos for £5.  Not exactly cheap but safe the day.  I think the arrangement is fairly Malaysian style - I bet there is a demand, so the officers at the high comm knew someone, suggested that to someone and they just go there and setup shop. Flexible works well this time.

I was there at around 10:00am, was seen at 11:00 and the passport (Machine readable) was ready for collection at 3pm. Cool.
